Bach: Magnificat
Handel: Messiah Part 1

After a busy summer for the choir, which included a concert in July and a tour of Brittany, M.D. Christopher Fletcher has put this programme together with the coming season in mind. He says, “Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without Messiah. We used to perform this every year but have rested it for a while. Now it’s time to revisit it, and Part 1 is the most Christmassy, to which we’ll be adding the Hallelujah Chorus as a finale. Both the choir and audiences love it.”
Christopher has paired Messiah with Bach’s Magnificat which he composed for Christmas 1723. This is not the first time the choir has performed the piece, as Christopher recalls with real honesty: “One of my first concerts with the Philharmonic included Magnificat and frankly we didn’t do it very well. So we’re going to have another go and this time we will do it justice!”
It is a challenging piece for the choir to learn, as Christopher explains: “Handel has written lots of convoluted, rippling semi-quaver runs in the choruses. They are not easy, but the overall effect never fails to exhilarate”.
